Frequently Asked Questions
What should I expect during my first massage therapy treatment?
Your therapist should take a thorough health history intake prior to beginning any treatment with you. After talking to your therapist about your desired treatment, she should step out of the room while you dress down to your level of comfort. You will be covered with sheets on a massage table and only the part of your body being worked on with be undraped. More often than not, your therapist will use a special oil or lotion to reduce the friction of your treatment. Your therapist should communicate with you regarding pressure, comfort, temperature or any other concerns that you may have.
What are the benefits of massage?
Frequent massage therapy will offer people several benefits. Some of these include but are not limited to, increased range of motion, relief from chronic pain and muscle tension, improved circulation of nutrients and oxygen to body organs, reduced post-surgery adhesions and scar tissue, boosted immune system function, less frequent headaches, decreased anxiety and stress and improved pregnancy and labor in expectant mothers.
Do I need to remove all of my clothes for my massage treatment?
Many people will remove all clothing to be able to receive the most thorough massage. However, if this is concern, only undress to your level of comfort. Your therapist will be able to provide you with a treatment regardless of your choice. Although, she may be a little more limited to the types of techniques that are performed. Please note, your therapist is accustomed to working with all different body types and is non-judgmental. She is only concerned with your muscle tissue and providing you with an effective treatment.
Where will my massage take place?
Your massage will normally take place in a dimly lit room with soft music. Your therapist may have a heated table and should try to make you as comfortable as possible.
Can anyone receive massage?
In most cases, massage is beneficial to people of all ages. However, in rare circumstances, certain medical conditions may be a contraindication to massage or you may need to have doctor’s approval prior to receiving treatment. Your therapist will discuss any issues that she sees presented on your health history intake. It is very important that you inform your therapist of any health conditions or medications that you are taking.
How long will a massage treatment last?
The average full body session lasts approximately 60 minutes. However, 30 minute sessions are available for partial body treatments with focused attention to certain areas or 90 minute appointments for a deeper more thorough experience.
How will I feel after my massage?
Most people will feel very relaxed. After an initial period of feeling slowed down, people often experience increased energy and freedom from long- term aches and pains developed from tension or repetitive activity. Since massage releases toxins that have been built up in the body, it is important that you drink plenty of water following your massage or you may feel nauseous, sluggish or experience a headache.
